Daguerreian Society

On this day (February 8) in the year 1848, the following notice
appeared in the "Boston Daily Evening Transcript":

DAGUERREOTYPES. Messrs Southworth & Hawes, 5 1/2 Tremont Row, have
just received from New Orleans a daguerrian portrait of Gen Taylor,
taken since his return from Mexico. It gives a much better idea of the
gallant General than any of the numerous portraits of him, extant. The
same artists have also a very excellent portrait of the lamented Col
Ranson, taken just previous to his Mexican expedition. These portraits
can be seen at the rooms, and copies taken.

(The daguerreotype of Zachary Taylor mentioned in this text may very
well be the source of the copy daguerreotype seen as plate 16 in
Sobieszek and Appel, "The Daguerreotypes of Southworth & Hawes" page
15. --G.W.E.)
