Lot 26: EUROPEAN HAND COLORED LADY
Sixth plate daguerreotype. English-style presentation flip-top case. She wears fingerless gloves (aka mitts) and black lace sleeves over white lace sleeves. The yellow tinting is unusual and neatly done.
ESTIMATE: $600 – 700.
Lot 27: CASES & NINTH PLATES
4 sixth plates (3 daguerreotypes, 1 tintype. All thermoplastic, 2 are octagonal). 13 ninth plates (9 daguerreotypes, 3 ruby glass ambrotypes, 1 tintype. 10 cases are full or with new spine mostly expertly done, 2 split cases, 1 half case. 2 cases are thermoplastic scenes. Includes one flip-top, probably English).
1) Chess Game case with daguerreotype of boy holding a case.

Lot 28: WHOLE PLATE OF CRAIG SCHNEIDER & FRIEND HANNI BY JERRY SPAGNOLI
Whole plate Daguerreotype. Full hand-crafted leather case.
Jerry Spagnoli is a modern master. Besides his books Daguerreotypes, American Dreaming and Heirloom Harvest, he is noted for working with the artist Chuck Close. His works of historical documentation include The Last Great Daguerreian Survey of the Twentieth Century and Local Stories. Jerry’s work is in the collections of The Whitney Museum of Modern Art, The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, The National Portrait Gallery, The Fogg Museum, The Museum of Modern Art, The Chrysler Museum, The Art Institute of Chicago, The High Museum and the New York Historical Society.

Lot 29. DIONYSOS AT THE MET BY MIKE ROBINSON
THIS LOT IS A GENEROUS DONATION FROM MIKE ROBINSON.
Half-plate daguerreotype taken at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Roman Sculpture Court, depicting Dionysos, god of wine and divine intoxication. The daguerreotype was taken in October 2008, by Mike Robinson, when he was invited to give a talk and demonstrate the daguerreotype process to the Stieglitz Society. The 2000 year old stone sculpture is a Roman copy of a Greek work and was acquired through The Frederick W. Richmond Foundation, Judy and Michael Steinhardt, and Mr. and Mrs. A. Alfred Taubman, in 1990.
ESTIMATE: $1600 – 2000.
Lot 30: THE BRETONNE LADY, FULL PLATE DAGUERREOTYPE
Full plate daguerreotype. Presentation case. The delightful lady has as strong a holographic (three-dimensional) presence as any daguerreotype we've seen. The hand coloring is exquisite. She's animated with a sly smile and twinkle in her eyes.
ESTIMATE: $7500 – 8500.
Lot 31: A DANDY & A MAN BY AUMAISTRE, PARIS
Two daguerreotypes (sixth plate, half plate).
1) Sixth plate. Oval case. A dandy with a mustache and watch chain.
2) Half plate. Passe partout in a wood frame. Pensive well-dressed man looking down. Label on reverse: "F. Aumistre, Portraits en Daguerreotype, Paris."
ESTIMATE: $650 - 750.
Lot 32: NEW TACOMA, WASHINGTON, PUGET SOUND BY CARLETON WATKINS
This is a variant (this view is closer up) of a photograph in the Collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, entitled "New Tacoma, Washington, Puget Sound 1882."
ESTIMATE: $4500 - 5500.
Lot 33: SAN FRANCISCO PANORAMA
"San Francisco is not like anything but itself. The hills on which it is built are partly covered with houses, and partly projecting in huge banks of earth; so that the city looks as if stuck on a hill side. Altogether it has a raw and half finished appearance, unlike any of the cities of the Old World, and not like many of the new. But, if the first view is disappointing, the second and nearer view is reassuring. When one lands at the quay and enters the city, he soon perceives the signs of a vigorous life. He drives through miles of well-built streets; the shops and stores are large, and gay with animation, and all wears an air of business no where seen in an American city." Henry M. Field, "San Francisco as Seen by an Intelligent Traveller" from the San Francisco News Letter and California Advertiser, Nov. 11, 1876.

Lot 34: THE CAMERA AND THE PENCIL M.A. ROOT (1st ED. 1864 & PROVENANCE)
This is a first edition of Marcus Root’s classic The Camera and the Pencil. In period ink inside the front cover is "Prof. James Russell Lowe(ll) Cambridge with the Respects of the Author." Also in pencil "Mrs. M. U. Osgood to G.E. Bradbury 1879."
Marcus Root studied painting under Thomas Sully in the 1830s and eventually opened a school on Penmanship as well as writing books on the subject. He was an early practitioner of daguerreotypes, studying under Robert Cornelius in Philadelphia. In 1856 Marcus Root's leg was severely injured in a train accident and while recuperating from that (he never fully recovered) he started writing The Camera and the Pencil, which was published in 1864. In it he points out that photography is more than a mechanical innovation; that one must be an artist with a vision (sources: Historic Camera website, Luminous-Lint website).
ESTIMATE: $1200 - 1500.
Lot 35: HALF PLATE BY SAMUEL ROOT, BROADWAY, N.Y.
Half plate daguerreotype. Thermoplastic case. Stamped on brass mat lower left "S. Root 363 Broadway-N.Y." The artistic pose immediately sets it apart. There’s an animated ‘feel’ to this pose that's refreshing. She looks familiar.
ESTIMATE: $800 - 1000.
Lot 36: 24 MORE
24 images. 3 quarter plate daguerreotypes including family of four (1 full case, 2 half cases). 3 quarter plate ambrotypes including 3 children (1 half case, 2 uncased). 16 sixth plate dags in 14 cases includes child, mother & child, 2 women & a couple (2 double cases, all cases are split or full including a black Boston style push-button case). 1 ninth plate dag of mother and daughter (split case). 1 ninth plate ambrotype of man with open book (split case).
ESTIMATE: $400 - 500.
Lot 37: DAGUERREOTYPES OF DAGUERREOTYPES
1) Mother & child. Rarely seen image of a girl wearing a daguerreian pendant, presumably of the father. Away on business? Lost at sea? Draw your own conclusions.
2) Man holding two daguerreotype cases next to each other, displaying one image which is reflected nevertheless.
3) Woman holding a very visible daguerreotype of a man.
4) A daguerreotype of a daguerreotype plate.
ESTIMATE: $1300 - 1500.
Lot 38: DAGUERREOTYPES OF FRENCH CHILDREN
Three daguerreotypes (quarter plate, sixth plate, and smaller than sixth).
1) In between ninth plate and sixth plate size. Velvet case. Father in semi-profile holds adorable baby, who stares at the camera.
2) Quarter plate. Passe partout in wall frame. Two girls wear dresses with fringe, and hold hands.
3) Sixth plate. Passe partout frame. Two vignetted girls with off-the-shoulder dresses.
ESTIMATE: $750 - 850.
LOT 39: 1840s LADY LEANING BACK IN A CHAIR, FRANCE
Quarter plate daguerreotype. Paper mat, wood frame with gold leaf. This early plate depicts a woman in an unconventional pose, leaning her head back while sitting sideways in a chair. There is ink writing on reverse, but it's partial and we’re not sure it pertains to the image.
ESTIMATE: $700 – 850.
Lot 40: AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN WITH A STRONG GAZE
Ninth plate ambrotype. Thermoplastic wall frame, in very good condition with hook. The woman's eyes are fixed and she doesn't yield that gaze. She wears a striped shawl, which sits low, showing the dark over a white blouse underneath.
ESTIMATE: $700 – 850.
Lot 41: MASCHER VIEWER FEATURES DAGS BY JACOBS OF NEW ORLEANS
Quarter plate size case. 2 daguerreotypes, referred to as a 'stereo daguerreotype.' Embossed in gold gilding inside the case is "Mascher's Improved Stereoscope Philada. Patent March 5th 1853." This is corroborated by the resource American Photographic Patents The Daguerreotype and Wet Plate Era 1840-1880, by Janice G. Schimmelman, which lists patent #9,611 as "Daguerreotype-case" by John F. Mascher in Philadelphia, Pa. on the corresponding date. Stamped on the brass mat of the daguerreotype is "E. Jacobs N. O." According to Craig’s Daguerreian Registry, by John Craig, Edward Jacobs operated as a photographer in New Orleans, Louisiana from 1844-1861.
ESTIMATE: $1100 - 1300.
Lot 42: THE URN IS INTEGRAL TO THE COMPOSITION
Half plate daguerreotype. Full case. This would ordinarily be called an 'architectural study,' but for the five or more people in front of the doorway. While it's clear there are three men to the left, the gender and ethnicity of the two people at right are in question. Which brings us back to the urn. This daguerreotype would not be nearly the same without the urn.
The seller suggested that the location is Greig Hall, Canandaigua, N.Y., but we cannot verify that.
ESTIMATE: $2500 - 3500.
Lot 43: NINE AMERICAN DAGUERREIAN PORTRAITS, MOSTLY MAKER MARKED
9 sixth plate daguerreotypes. 4 full cases. 4 full split cases, 1 half case.
1) Woman by "J. D. Wells, Artist, Portraiture" in velvet pad. This term "portraiture" is seldom seen on velvet pads. J.D. Wells was a noted maker in Western Massachusetts.
2) Woman by "Chase" (brass mat). This is the work of Lorenzo Chase, a greatly-respected competitor of Southworth & Hawes.
3) Very handsome man with five-pointed star at his neck. We can only guess the significance of this star.
4) Man by "Willard" of Philadelphia (velvet pad). Lively ascot.
5) Woman wearing fingerless gloves (mitts) with painted backdrop by “Willard” of Philadelphia.
6) Man with painted drapes.
7) Hand-colored child.
8) Woman wearing a shawl by "Whitney" (stamped on brass mat).
9) Man by "Meade Bros. NY" (stamped in brass mat). The Meade Bros. were influential in the development of photography.
ESTIMATE: $500 - 650.
Lot 44: ISAAC H. BONSALL, SOLDIER AT LULAH LAKE, LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, GA.
Albumen Print (12 ¾ X 10 inches).

Lot 45: PAINTED BACKDROPS & BENT WOOD: A COLLECTION OF TINTYPES
This is a collection of tintypes that feature painted backdrops and bent wood. There are 162 of them. Most are what’s loosely called "CDV size" and average 3 ½ X 2 ½ inches or roughly 9 X 6 centimeters. (Only 1 is significantly smaller and only 4 are significantly larger.) This is a carefully culled collection.
ESTIMATE: $600 - 800.
Half plate daguerreotypes. Each in passe partout. Each with identification on reverse. Woman: "Louise Wilhelmine Erb. geb. Strecker (?) * 21.7.1840 + 10.9.1924 in Bremen." Man: "Johannes Erb. * 27.2.1831 in Gontershausen + 2.12.1891 in Bremen."
ESTIMATE: $500 - 600.
Lot 47: FRENCH AMBROTYPES, FEATURING A MAN READING
Three ambrotypes (2 quarter plates, 1 ninth plate).
1) Quarter plate. Passe partout frame. Elegantly dressed man reads a book at arm's length. Nice facial tint.
2) Quarter plate. Passe partout frame. Family of five adults, possibly outside in a garden.
3) Ninth plate. Velvet case. Man with muttonchops leaning on a table.
ESTIMATE: $500 - 600.
Lot 48: RUSSIAN DAGUERREOTYPE OF A WOMAN IN A BLUE DRESS
Sixth plate. Paper mat in metal frame. Woman wearing blue dress holds a book with one hand and flowers with the other. There's a bonnet on the table and the photographer props include a large plant. Small green label of Moscow daguerreotypist on reverse.
ESTIMATE: $2500 - 3000.
Lot 49: RUSSIAN DAGUERREOTYPE: MUSTACHED MAN WITH CLENCHED FIST
Sixth plate. Double matted with gold paper and red cloth. Covered wood frame. The consignor states that this daguerreotype came from the same source and same place of sale as the previous daguerreotype, and that's why he's confidant it's Russian. Early plate shows a man of character sporting gold jewelry. Unusual presentation.
ESTIMATE: $500 – 600.
Lot 50: DAGUERREOTYPE FROM RUSSIA OF MAN WITH FAUX BACKGROUND
ESTIMATE: $600 – 700.
