The first daguerreotypists were scientists trying to understand relationships of light and photogenic substances. They knew the chemistry of the time and how to make and handle the needed chemicals. When certain discoveries made photography practical in the 1840s, these materials found their way into the hands of ambitious entrepreneurs who, though inexperienced, saw the commercial opportunities of the daguerreotype.
