We don't know what the image this woman dressed in white is looking at. The daguerreotype is encased in a "Sailboat" design leather case with gold-tinting on the front. Close examination of the daguerreotype also shows gold-tinting on the case. Perhaps she is looking at the empty case into which her image is to be placed.
