This image gives us a glimpse of the way America looked in the 1850's. There are more people here posing for the camera than first meets the eye. Two men are standing proud in front of their stores, two girls pose with bonnet and parasol, another girl stands alone and there are three additional people in the windows, two of which are reading newspapers. A lone man stands at the right apparently entering the fence gate. Why wasn't he looking at the camera? Did they all gather together after the picture was taken to see the results of the daguerreotypist's work?
