Sixth-plate daguerreotype by Richard Lowe of Cheltenham. Lowe was a master of subtle lighting and tinting. The quality of his daguerreotypes earned him a considerable reputation--but he still left Cheltenham suddenly one night under cover of darkness, leaving huge debts, and was never heard of again! Circa 1850s
